Reusable Nappy Week (April 27th – May 4th, 2026) is the perfect moment to open up honest, judgement-free conversations about how we parent day-to-day especially when it comes to nappies, cost, sustainability, and the little decisions no one really prepares you for.

One question that keeps coming up (and getting strong opinions) is this:

“If you take a nappy off before bath time and it’s still dry… do you put it back on, or use a fresh one?”

At first glance, it seems simple. But once you start talking about it, you realise just how divided parents are.

What Parents Are Saying

We’ve seen responses range from:

  1. “If it’s clean, it’s totally fine!” - Many parents feel there’s nothing wrong with reusing a dry nappy. After all, it hasn’t been soiled so why waste it?

  2. “I always use a fresh one after a bath.” - Others say it’s about the feeling, a warm, clean bath followed by a fresh nappy just feels cleaner and more comfortable.

  3. “Each to their own, no judgement.” - A large group of parents sit in the middle, recognising that parenting choices often come down to personal preference, finances, and lifestyle.

The Nighttime Pull-Up Debate

This conversation overlaps a lot with another topic many parents quietly relate to, reusing dry nighttime pull-ups. We shared a full honest take on this in our blog:

Confessions of a Parent “Sometimes I Reuse Nighttime Pull-Ups”

When also shared this confession on Instagram, when I then realised just how many other parents do the exact same thing:

One parent shared:

“I reuse night-time pull-ups if they’re dry… the cost adds up, and the environmental impact matters.”

And honestly? They’re not alone. Because the reality is whether it’s after bath time or after a dry night the question is the same:

If it hasn’t been used… is it wasteful not to reuse it?

In that in-between stage of potty learning, when children aren’t fully dry yet it’s common to have nights where pull-ups stay completely dry. Throwing them away unused can feel wasteful both financially and environmentally.

Alongside decisions like whether to reuse a dry pull-up, many parents also look for simple ways to make nights easier and less wasteful. Waterproof reusable mattress protectors are one of those underrated parenting essentials. They’re easy to change in the night, quick to wash and dry, and can be reused night after night eliminating the need for single-use bed pads. Not only do they protect your mattress, but they also make those bed changes far less stressful, especially when you’re half asleep.

Cost vs Environmental Impact

Being honest, we all know that nappies are expensive! And costs can quickly add up.

  • Disposable nappies and pull-ups can cost hundreds (even thousands) per year.

  • Many are single-use plastics that take years to break down.

So it’s no surprise more parents are questioning:

  • “Is this waste necessary?”

  • “Can I make small changes without compromising hygiene?”

Some comments parents shared:

“100% yes!! If they’re dry they go back on! Too expensive and think of the waste”

“Reuse - I’ve spent 8 years buying nappies - I’m going to save money wherever I can”

“Reuse! Also swim nappies you can wash out and reuse. If they have done a wee the swim nappy will look a bit yellow so I throw them but you can usually get a lot of use from the same pair!”

“Yes I reused them if they weren’t wet. Nappies are a huge landfill problem. If I can reuse something again, I most certainly will.”

Where Reusables Come In

This is where reusable nappies naturally come into the conversation. Reusable nappies naturally shift the way many parents think about “use.” Instead of viewing nappies through a strict single-use lens, parents who use reusables tend to focus more on whether something is actually dirty or needs changing. This more flexible, practical mindset often carries over into how they approach disposable nappies too, helping families reduce unnecessary waste without adding extra stress or complexity to everyday routines.

So… What’s the “Right” Answer?

There isn’t one. It depends on you and your child.

What matters is:

  • The nappy is genuinely clean and dry

  • Your baby’s skin stays healthy

  • You feel comfortable with your choice

Everything else? It’s personal.

Let’s Keep the Conversation Going

In the end, what stands out most in this conversation isn’t finding a single “right” answer, but realising how many parents are quietly making the same everyday choices without talking about them. Whether it’s reusing a dry nappy, saving a pull-up for another night, or simply trying to balance cost, waste, and convenience, these aren’t bad habits; they're practical, real-life parenting decisions. This Reusable Nappy Week, it’s worth keeping those conversations open, honest, and free from judgement. Because whether you always choose a fresh nappy, reuse when it makes sense, or take a mixed approach with disposable and reusable options, you’re doing what works for your family and that’s what truly matters.
