At Hygge Sheets we have a passion for understanding our customers and their experiences. We have been talking to people who have experienced bedwetting in childhood as well as parents who have navigated bedwetting with their children so we can really understand how they felt and offer to advice to other parents, teenagers and children.
Its our passion to make bedwetting a more talked about subject through education and awareness.
This is a real life account of a mother of a 6 year old who became worried about her daughter who was still bedwetting.
Daytime Potty Training was very Easy
"Our daughter was dry in the day from 26 months, she just transitioned really easy and we didn't have many accidents with her either. I don't remember 'potty training' her - it just happened. She was ready and we followed her lead, which worked well for us all!
Her nappy was always really wet over night though and she'd only had a handful of dry nights before starting school. I happened to mention it to my son's health visitor when our daughter was about 4 and she suggested speaking to the school nurse, who could refer to the enuresis clinic, if she was still bed wetting at 5 years old.
We decided together, with our daughter, that we wanted to try and move away from using pull-ups and because she was still very wet at night when she was coming up to 5 and a half, we decided to speak to the school nurse about it.
After a brief chat with the school nurse, the first step was to trial going without pull-ups to see if she had just become too comfortable in them.
A trial without pull-ups
So, armed with lots of extra bedding, we went for it......for 12 weeks. I can count on one hand how many dry nights we had. She would sleep through until about 5-6am and would wake up soaking.
It was a difficult few months with all the washing, showering and early mornings and some disturbed nights. Then, after 3 months, we decided, together once more, to go back to the pull-ups.
Since then, we've been seen twice at the enuresis clinic. The first time, we were sent home to increase our daughter's water intake for another 3 months. She only drinks water and milk anyway, so it wasn't a battle to get her to drink water.
But getting her to drink between 1 litre and 1.5 litres was tough, especially when she was in school. We explained that she needed to stretch her bladder and she tried her best, but continued to be wet at night.
"But getting her to drink between 1 litre and 1.5 litres was tough"
We also monitored her bed wetting pattern and agreed with the nurse that it looked as if it was linked to a lack of vasopressin - signs included wetting early at night and urine not very concentrated.
So, we're a couple of months into taking desmomelts - started with a dose of 120 and have upped it to 240. She still isn't dry every night, but she is for about 1/3rd of the time. On the mornings she isn't dry, she isn't soaking like she used to be. So there is definitely progress.
She's still in pull-ups so, over the next half term holiday, when I'm also on annual leave, we're going to go without them and hopefully, we won't go back. But it's ok if we do - we'll see how things go.
What has helped as a Parent?
What has helped us is understanding the causes of bed wetting......but there's so much information out there, it's hard to know where to go. The best resource has definitely been the Eric website and in particular a zoom webinar they did one evening that went through the causes, how different bed wetting patterns identify the cause and how to help/treatments.
Being informed before attending our first enuretic clinic appointment meant that we were prepared and was a huge benefit! I've also been able to talk to family about it who were initially quite judgmental!
I have spoken to a few people about it who have helped to easy my anxiety about it because it's a lot more common than we think!

Following different Instagram pages like Hygge Sheets is great too just to get snippets of information now and again, and to raise awareness of it because it does impact on so many children.
It's been exhausting at times - the 12 weeks of wet beds, explaining to relatives it isn't laziness and trying to deal with the worry but remembering it's ok and it's very common.
We've tried hard to increase our daughters water intake - but she's 6 and she will drink when she's thirsty. I'm worried that we've put too much pressure on her to drink because the clinic told us she has to drink between a litre and a litre and a half of water a day. Getting the balance right has been a challenge!

What has been difficult as a parent with a bedwetting child?
The most difficult thing has been seeing our daughter upset because her friends don't wear pull-ups and one of them laughed at her. She attends a small school with only 34 pupils and as far as I'm aware, there aren't any others going through this at the moment. It's lonely for her even though we don't make a big deal about it.
To help - I'd say more awareness raising and for schools to help with the water intake. It isn't a bad thing for children to be drinking water throughout the day!!

Just to add that we've been prescribed desmomelts since October - started on the 120mg and increased to 240mg after a month as it wasn't really making a difference. We had a break around February, and we're a month back in now and we're finally seeing an improvement - dry nights were very ad hoc but she's had 10 dry nights out of the last 15, which is amazing!!
I've learned a lot through my reflexologist - our daughter has been seeing her twice a month since Jan too and she does seem to be dryer after her session. It's so interesting learning about the nervous system and it's impact on bed wetting.
